Savannah Bicycle Campaign Launched

Cyclists and Bicycle Enthusiasts Come Together to Form Advocacy Group
Savannah, GA – With level terrain, great weather, and tree lined streets, Savannah is a great city for cycling, so it would seem, though we face obstacles to riding everyday such as aggressive motorists, lack of appropriate parking, too few and poorly maintained bikeways.

Representing various cycling groups, interested citizens, bike shops, and students, the Savannah Bicycle Campaign (SBC) is being formed to promote bicycling for recreation, transportation, and fun! The objectives of the SBC are to work through the political, public policy, and citizen advocacy processes to develop more and better bicycle facilities in Savannah—improved bike lanes, racks, and signage—and to develop a public campaign to educate bicyclists and drivers about safe practices on and off the roadways.  The SBC will be the public advocacy group for the rights of cyclists and promote cycling as an efficient alternative to motorized transportation.

Made up entirely of volunteers, the group has been meeting bi-weekly and has already formed committees to focus on areas such as policy, cycling education and safety, and outreach. The response from the cycling community has been very enthusiastic.

Quality Bike Shop owner Mike Maynor stated, “The Savannah Bicycle Campaign fills a niche in Savannah. The interests and issues important to cyclists are unique and the SBC fills that void in a positive and constructive way that will benefit the entire community – and help encourage people to take up cycling!”

Elected officials in Savannah have also responded positively to the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.  County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis and Mayor Otis Johnson will participate in the group’s inaugural ride entitled, Savannah Wheelie on April 19.

The Savannah Wheelie, being held in conjunction with Earth Day festivities in Forsyth Park, seeks to raise awareness of bicycles and their benefits to our health and community. The ride begins at 3 PM on April 19, from the south end of the Park and goes along the historic bike route.  This ride will be the first in a series of monthly rides throughout Savannah.

The new nonprofit organization already has a website, HYPERLINK “http://www.bicyclecampaign.org/” \o “blocked::http://www.bicyclecampaign.org/” \t “_blank” www.bicyclecampaign.org, where people can find out more information, join, or find cycling related events to participate in throughout the coastal area.
